Victoria Sin – Screening of A View from Elsewhere: A fantasy in three acts by Victoria Sin ft Whiskey Chow
Victoria Sin (b. 1991, Toronto CA) is an artist using speculative fiction within performance, moving image, writing, and print to interrupt normative processes of desire, identification, and objectification. Drawing from close personal encounters of looking and wanting, their work presents heavily constructed fantasy narratives on the often unsettling experience of the physical within the social body. DJ Cường Phạm
Cường Phạm is currently doing a part-time Master’s in Southeast Asia studies at SOAS, he is currently working on his thesis, Vietnamese hip-hop. He is also actively involved in the local East & Southeast Asian communities in London, where he is project co-coordinator of HEAC (Hackney East Asia Community) working with Hackney Chinese Community Services and An Viet Foundation. Through his work at the grassroots, he and artist Will Pham has co-curated, ‘Record, Retrieve, Reactivate’ which explored the history of the Southeast Asian community centred around the An Viet Foundation.
Previously Cường has co-organised Vietnam Now, a multi-arts initiative represented and reflected in a new generation questioning and redefining diaspora and the practice of Vietnameseness. In his spare time Cường likes to hunt down old vinyl, concentrating mainly sounds from Saigon, from early 1960s to 1975, some of which makes onto “Songs from Southeast“, a radio show he co-hosts.
DJ Ritu & Club Kali
East London born DJ Ritu began her career as a Pop, Disco, Soul & Motown specialist in 1986. She was head-hunted by new global beats club ASIA in Islington, which propelled her into the World Music scene. Working alongside African expert David McAlmont (later McAlmont & Butler) and Rai & Latin aficionado Don Tyler, she quickly fell in love with music by The Bhundu Boys, Chaba Fadela, and Sierra Maestra. Ritu set out to champion local artists, but also stole interviews with the crème de la crème of international stars like Tarkan, Angelique Kidjo, A.R. Rahman, Mariza & Omara Portuondo. Twelve years on the programme is London’s definitive weekly global music show, broadcasting on Wednesdays from SOAS Radio at 4pm, and Resonance 104.4fm at 6.30pm, plus online at Mixcloud and iTunes. As a long-time club promoter, Ritu continues to set new trends through her regular London club nights – Kuch Kuch (18yrs), Kali (23 yrs), and Hoppa (7 yrs) – which collectively reflect her expertise in African, Latin, Middle-Eastern, Mediterranean, and Bollywood flavours, but meanwhile, she’s still very much a Pop queen! Catch her on radio, in clubs, at festivals, or when she’s hosting events at Rich Mix, the Southbank Centre, A World In London LIVE, and all over!
DJ Qiu
DJ Qiu’s SOAS radio show, “bang bang bang de qiao men sheng (梆梆梆的敲门声)” platforms independent sounds from the People’s Republic of China. Tonight DJ Qiu will be bringing an eclectic mix of feel-good tracks from China’s many thriving music scenes.
