‘Queer’ Asia 2019 Art Exhibition: The Liminal

‘Queer’ Asia is pleased to announce the launch of its second annual art exhibition, The Liminal. The concept of the liminal refers to a threshold, a marginal space and a transitional phase. The artwork showcased in the 2019 exhibition speaks to these ideas. The Liminal addresses critical issues regarding gender and sexual identity by providing a unique insight into how queerness is imagined and experienced in different Asian contexts.

From rendering a previously invisible queer consciousness visible in Asia and Asian diasporas to questioning the misrepresentation of LGBTQ+ Asia in global socio-political discourses, the artwork exhibited in The Liminal reflects what is openly acknowledged, what is quietly endured, and the areas which oscillate between them. By doing so, the exhibition demonstrates that the battle for Asian LGBTQ+ rights and equality is still an ongoing process that is often overlooked.

Although the liminal can be characterised as disorientating and isolating, it can also contain the powerful potential for subversion. As a transitory state, the liminal pushes predetermined norms and structures to its limits, opening the possibility for new narratives. The 2019 ‘Queer’ Asia exhibition aims to illustrate the liminal as the site that not only challenges traditional constructions of sexuality and gender politics in Asia and Asian diasporas, but one that, ultimately, holds a promise of change.
