PLEASE NOTE:
1. Successful participants will be expected to attend the whole programme for four days.
2. The programme will take around 30 participants.
3. Participants will be required to produce a ‘concept piece’ on ‘queer Asia’ (text, art, film, and/or alternative forms) for discussions on Day 2.
4. We can offer certification if required.
Building on the success of three Conferences (2016-2018) and two Film Festivals (2017 and 2018), we have decided to focus this year on our first ever ‘Queer’ Asia Summer Programme, bringing together academics, activists, performers, film-makers, and artists from divergent backgrounds and regional contexts. Running in tandem will be our 2019 Film Festival and 2019 Art Exhibition, housed at the British Museum, London.
‘Queer’ Asia is a network of queer identifying scholars, academics, activists, filmmakers, artists, and performers. Our aim is to provide a platform for inter-Asia collaboration, dialogue, and research on issues affecting people who self-identify as LGBTQI+ or belong to other non-normative sexualities and gender identities in Asia or Asian diasporas.
The goals of the ‘Queer’ Asia summer programme are to diversify knowledge on queer experience and specific regions by bringing together ideas, learning, and strategies from other Asian contexts through engagement in active participatory dialogue. The inter-disciplinary and inter-media model of the summer programme is intended to broaden our understanding of thinking about queer and Asian intersectionality. How do different mediums (academic, cinematic, artistic, practitioner-led works) reflect and negotiate queerness in Asia, what are their strategies and methodologies, how can collaborative models of resistance and development be framed and help envision new possibilities? The range of workshops, roundtables, and sessions that we have planned serve to both decolonise fixed methodologies but also enhance and build capacity among participants.
In addition to non-standard formats of learning such as through capacity building workshops, participant lead round-tables, engagement with film, art, and other activities, we aim to bring together participants from different and complementary backgrounds and countries. We envision a collaborative learning environment which focuses on building and enriching participant capacity. We aim to renew and build on the links made at our previous activities in new directions. Applications are invited from participants who are able to bring regionally and context specific knowledge, experience, and expertise, as well as from different backgrounds, whether art, performance, film, activism, academia, and beyond.

Morning – Concept piece discussions: what is your version of ‘Queer Asia’?
Afternoon – Practice-based Workshop: Film and practice based research
Day 3 – Wednesday 17 July
Morning – Methods Workshop: Choral activism and performance
Evening – Film screening and panel discussion (Film Festival as Method – Curation, Challenges, Content)
Day 4 – Thursday 18 July
Morning – Practice-based Workshop: Queering Methods
Afternoon – Reflective Session
Evening – Closing Event
